In the book I Am Legend by Richard Matheson the protagonist, Robert Neville, is a very interesting character in a very interesting situation. He lives in New York but there is no one else there except for people affected by a disease that makes them mutants. He is the only person left because he decided to stay so that he could study the creatures and find a cure for the disease so that he could bring the whole population back to normal. Since he has been living alone and in fear of the creatures for a long time he starts to talk to things that aren't actually there. In a way he developes relationships with inanimate objects. He also gets so bored with not talking to anyone that he kills the mutants during the day for sport. Eventually the mutants get so smart that they send someone in and get him to come out and go with them. They send in a woman that has been modified so that she looks normal and can go outside during the day unlike the other mutants. Since Neville hadn't interacted with a real human being in many years he was of course very excited to talk to this woman. His trust became his ultimate downfall when he trusted her enough to let her into his house. When he was asleep she let the other mutants take him away to their city where they killed him. This shows that Neville was way to trusting but who could blame him for letting her into his house he hadn't talked to anyone in a very long time.
